They defeated Jarasanda every time he invaded Mathura.
After ensuring the safety of Mathura people from the army of Jarasandha by defeating him for seventeen times Shri Krishna shifted his family from Mathura to Dwaraka a township built for him by divine architect Vishwakarma for the safety of people of Mathura.
After shifting people, their belongings and treasure from Mathura to Dwaraka, Shri Krishna and Balarama fled to the forest of Gomantak. There they met Lord Parashurama who was in penance. They had thorough counselling with him to build up a strong army and weaponry to conquer Jarasandha. He follows up to finish Shri Krishna and Balarama to Gomantak hill.

There was a great fight between Jarasandha, Kaalyavana and Shri Krishna and Balarama and their respective armies.
Exile & Resistance: Krishna's Wat from the Shadows
Shri Krishna invoked his weapon Sudarshana and Balarama his weapon Plough(Halayudha) in this battle. Shri Krishna fled into a cave in which king Muchakunda was in deep sleep. Shri Krishna covered Muchakunda with his Peetambara and fled deep into the cave. Kaalyavana mistaking Muchakunda for Krishna, snatched the peetambara due to which, who followed Krishna saw Muchakunda covered with peetambara Muchakunda opened his eyes. The fire flamed from his eyes and burnt Kaalyavana to ashes. Shri Krishna bestowed His grace and blessed Muchakunda for moksha according to the story from Harivansha Purana. Shri Balarama who encountered with Jarasandha was about to kill him, but Aaskash vaani (divine declaration from sky) forbid him to do so.
